About Dunk Island

Part of Queensland's Cassowary Coast Region, Dunk Island is fringed by golden sand, aquamarine water and lush tropical rainforest. The island sits in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and has an incredible underwater ecosystem. Things to do in Dunk Island

As part of Australia's legendary Great Barrier Reef, Dunk Island boasts world-class snorkelling just offshore. Rent a snorkel set for the chance to swim amongst rainbow corals, cruise past sea turtles and admire friendly dugongs.

Dunk Island is laced with walking trails that offer a fascinating glimpse at the local ecosystem. One of the area’s best trails winds through virgin rainforests, over a suspension bridge and onwards to the scenic Mount Koo-Tal-Oo Lookout. Keep an eye out for local wildlife like terns, noddies, pythons and geckos.

From leisurely brunches to sunset cocktails, the Dunk Island Sunset Cafe is a fantastic place to refuel. If you've worked up an appetite, there's nothing better than devouring a mouth-watering local seafood platter. Alternatively, you can pack a picnic and enjoying a leisurely lunch by the beach.

While most people stay in nearby Mission Beach, it’s possible to obtain a permit and camp on Dunk Island. The island is home to eight campsites complete with picnic tables and barbecues. There are also convenient facilities, such as toilets and hot showers.

Getting around Dunk Island

Dunk Island sits four kilometres off Queensland’s coastline opposite the town of Mission Beach. The Mission Beach Water Taxi has been ferrying passengers to the island since 1975, with the trip taking around 10 minutes. There are no cars on the island, so you'll need to get around on foot.
