Located just a stone’s throw from the United Arab Emirates’ border with Oman, Sufayri is a small town in the Hajar Mountains. It’s on the doorstep of Hatta’s traditional village and recreational dam and is the starting point for several mountain biking and hiking trails.
Things to do in Şufayrī
Take a step back in time at the Hatta Heritage Village, which has been reconstructed in the style of a traditional mountain settlement. Wander between the old stone houses and buildings made from mud, palm tree trunks and fronds, then admire the defensive tower and traditional falaj water system. In addition to a mosque, the village features exhibits displaying vintage weapons, furniture and everyday objects.
You can soak up the natural beauty of the Hajar Mountains while kayaking along the Hatta Dam. It was established in the 1990s to supply the surrounding communities with electricity and is renowned for its turquoise waters that contrast dramatically to the desert-like surroundings. Not to miss is the large mural commemorating the founding fathers of the United Arab Emirates, including Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum.
Sufayri is home to the Hatta Mountain Bike Trail Centre, where you can rent bicycles for exploring the surrounding trails. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, you can chat with the friendly staff about the trail options available, then grab a drink at the on-site cafe. Hiking trails also depart from Sufayri to the Hatta Lakes and the remains of the Suhaila Mosque.
